The I and B Minister Reddy told the media on 16th of November, Press Day, how he intended to let the Press in India remain one of the most free in the world, but asked them to be responsible. Why he did not allow free Radio too (as only AIR can broadcast news and current affairs in India) was not known. It is ridiculous in a democracy. The other day the PM had also quoted Voltaire on freedom of ideas and how he would defend them –– so we offer this little aside as a book has been published which could create waves regarding the history of India and Pakistan. On the same day 16th Nov there was a militant attack in the heart of Srinagar and Muslim militants were involved. The genesis of the Hindu–Muslim divide needs careful study and we recommend the invaluable Middle East Research Institute (MEMRI) study published recently. The theme is that putting an end to terrorism is only possible by putting and end to the ideology that plants hatred in our society. It gives the steps and President Bush it says is wrong by saying Democracy can eradicate terrorism. France saw some car burning recently by the young mainly Muslims who could become terrorists. For India our India–Pakistan history is important.

History has recorded that a little young thing went up to Churchill after the war and said "Sir you will go down in history as the greatest PM.” He had replied, “It depends on who writes the history." He wrote nine volumes of the ‘History of The Second World War’ and won a Nobel Prize. History may easily be distorted by a clever writer if he wants to.

Now a militant Hilal War from Kashmir writes of some of India's most bizarre events like the Mutiny of 1857, the British machinations in India, creation of Pakistan, the genisis of the problem of Kashmir, the deaths of our leaders from Netaji Bose (a thorn in Nehru's side according to the author), Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and Mrs Indira Gandhi to some real Hindu Muslim issues that had not been addressed before.

The majority of the car burning in France recently was the work of Algerian and other Muslim aliens but this is never clearly reported in the press. Hilal War tries to make a lot of sense in many of his propositions by clever writing. His first claim is that it was the Muslim soldiers who started the 1857 mutiny and India would have gained Indepndence, had the Hindu soldiers not sided with the British as they did. According to the author Jinnah asked for Pakistan because he was double crossed by Nehru and the Congress and he asserts that Vajpayee and Advani were aware of Nathuram Godse's plan to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi –– as the Mahatma wanted to got to Pakistan and make peace with Muslims after Partition which caused 2 million deaths. The RSS were dead agianst it. Both leaders were too young at the time, but were fiery leaders of the RSS and Advani was certainly a firebrand young teacher in a school in Karachi even before 1947. This and a whole lot of historical facts right or wrong are tabled in this unusual book whose theme is, “a Muslim can be rented but a Hindu can be bought” and one wonders how right this militant  writer is in this day and age. He needs reading anyway.
