Indian Air Force Surya Kirans showing their mettle

India is venturing out and now it is the turn of the Air Force. The brilliant Surya Kiran aerobatics team of some 100 officers and airmen are at Singapore to show off their flying abilities. Another team of 20 for the indigenous advanced light helicopter (ALH) named Dhruv will also be there, to showcase India's own home built helicopter, to the world's gathering of aviation experts at the biggest air show in the East. The Indian contingent of stalls is being managed by SIATI, which represents all the Indian companies that manufacture small aircraft and their equipment and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

Air Chief Marshal Srinivasapuram Krishnaswamy, the Air Chief will be in Singapore on 23rd accompanied by CIDS Vice Admiral Raman Puri and a team of specialists that includes Rear Admiral Damle a fighter pilot who is Flag Officer Naval Aviation and Commanding Goa Area. The Air Chief’s press conference is attracting a lot of attention as India is on the radar screen of the world and is looking out for a fleet of transport aircraft, latest equipment and command and control systems and the SU 30 MKI is making waves.

India has improved the India version and claims it is one of the best fighter/bombers and as of now 5 F 15C Eagles the world's best from USA are taking part in a 10 day long exercise with KC 135 tankers and an Indian fleet of aircraft at the Mirage 2000 airbase in Gwalior. These are exciting days for India as the Surya Kiran team is venturing out for the first time having once performed briefly in Sri Lanka. It is with pride that one can say SAP India's magazine company that brings out the International Aerospace under the editorship of Hormuz Mama will be at the show and will bring out an Indian Show Daily with reporters Ranjit B Rai, Fernandes and Mickee Menon amongst others. It is a red-letter day for India that an Indian magazine group is reporting this event that costs money and needs expertise. The saying at SAP is, ’if the IAF can send Surya Kirans then we need to support it and why not!’

All the global giants EADS, BAe, Lockheed, Embraer, Finmeccanica, Bombardier, Israel Aircraft Industries, China's CATIC and a host of other global leaders in aerospace and defence will be participating in the Asian Aerospace 2004 exhibition at the Changi Exhibition Centre from February 24 to 29. The Asia-Pacific region is fast becoming the major area of growth for the world economy and the Indian aviation Industry is set to grow. Smaller airlines like Sahara and Jet have been permitted to fly to Sri Lanka. With their outstanding products and services these companies and airlines are committed to be part of this growth.

EADS the European giant will presents its wide range of capabilities in aircraft manufacturing for civil (Airbus, ATR, Socata), and military purposes (Eurofighter, A 400M, CN-235, Mako), helicopters (NH 90, AS 532 MKI Cougar), UAVs, (Eagle, Orka) and many other defence and security applications as well as space technologies and service offerings in Hall A. Singapore Aerospace will hold centre stage at the show and the JSF will be displayed along with all the other major aircraft as Singapore has a stake in the JSF and UK is already profiting by the partnership and looks to the plane for its carriers.

Finmeccanica, Italy’s leading high-tech Group, will be at Asian Aerospace 2004 as it is a system integrator in aerospace and defence applications: network-centric warfare, satellite services, homeland security and EEZ control, training of military pilots, air traffic management, C4ISR, naval combat management systems. Finmeccanica has stated it will participate with its companies Alenia Aeronautica (aircraft, aerostructures), Alenia Spazio (satellites, satellite solutions), Galileo Avionica (avionics, UAV), Marconi Selenia Communications (military and governmental communications) and with the joint ventures AgustaWestland (helicopters) and MBDA (missiles) that represents centres of excellence and a comprehensive product portfolio to compete on the global market.

Finmeccanica controls renowned companies such as Alenia Aeronautica, Aermacchi, Oto Melara, WASS, Marconi Selenia Communications, Galileo Avionica, Alenia Spazio, Telespazio, while joint ventures include the world leading helicopter company, AgustaWestland, Eurofighter, ATR (regional aircraft), AMS (defence electronics, C4ISR and ATM) and MBDA. All these companies have a long track record as key suppliers of high-tech products to governments and airlines, and are acknowledged as reliable industrial partners to develop growth strategies on the international markets. Furthermore the Group is leader in the market of military and government communications. Despite its greater focus on the aerospace and defence businesses, the company is still committed to increasing the value of its other activities –– rail transport, energy generation and IT, where Finmeccanica controls a significant share in ST Microelectronics, one of the world's biggest microelectronics companies, which operates also in Singapore. We highlight this company as the Indian Navy needs to upgrade its older Westland Seakings and AgustaWestland can help.

Admiral Teo Chee Hean the young Minister of Defence of Singapore, a seasoned hand, will be there to receive guests from all over the world including Air Chiefs and Ministers. The exhibition company Reed and Singapore MOD from Bukit Gombak, know how to put up a grand show including receptions and VIP golf which many look forward to and we hope that Air Chief Krishnaswamy plays the game too. Teo Chee Hean was Chief of Singapore Navy in the late 80s, then moved to politics and has been in Defence, Finance and Education as junior Minister and now looks after the Defence of Singapore. Like most Chiefs in the East he has been to graduate school in USA and for him it was Harvard.

All aviation eyes are on AA 2004 and watch out for more.
