THE NUCLEAR DEAL 02 Dec 2007
The politics of the Nuclear Deal with the USA have overtaken the deal itself, which now appears to be in danger of being shelved. The Left who obviously felt affronted by the PMs stand have tried to show their coalition clout. They have been successful in delaying the progress of negotiations but at long last have okayed talks with the nuclear watchdog. The hopefulls say that with luck and clever maneouvering the deal should go through by March 2008. Most knowledgeable circles have welcomed the deal as good for India - more than the nuclear fuel supplies it would put India on an equitable footing on the world stage, without the restrictive sanctions placed on import of dual use technology, which we have endured for more than three decades. So what are the real issues? It is our apprehension that the Hyde Act fetters our sovereignty to test a nuclear device and so to stop us from making bombs. Is that really so? As someone suggested in the media the other day, it only applies to nuclear supplies and equipment got from the US. So we buy from others - France, Germany, Russia, Australia, Japan. They would all be willing to make some money by selling to us. The real problem may be in getting approvals from the NSG countries. It is here that we need USAs clout to make them agree. The Left feels that the PM has misled Parliament. Is that really so? Maybe they are just toeing the Moscow/Beijing line who may not be too happy about India's 123 Agreement. Certainly it is a lot better that what China got from the US. Lastly do we need nuclear power plants or not? We need time to perfect the technology to make nuclear fuel out of our vast Thorium reserves. In the meanwhile what do we do? So let's have your views. Have we got a good deal or what? |

Comments: (Send by email to idc1@ispone.net or use Feedback page) Shashi P. Singh, Albuquerque, NM 87108 USA Tel: 505-348-9177 (SSingh@lrri.org) India's communists are the fifth column of the enemy. They have played the same game since pre-independence times. They follow a failed ideology and they have fossilized minds which reflect their thinking. They think that what is good for China and Pakistan is not good for India because that will make India compete successfully. China's occupation of Tibet and controlling Himalayas is no problem for them. China's transfer of nuclear bomb and missile is OK for them. Did you ever heard any opposition from them? Giving Kashmir to Pakistan is a good idea for them. Surrendering to terrorism is the way to eliminate terror from India. Marxist politicians in the garb of "historians" have been spreading lies to our students. In fact they don't exist for India. They are based in India for enemies of India. We should not expect anything from them. Oppostion of nuclear deal by them should have been expected. Jimmy John Perakatt (jjjperakatt@gmail.com; Mob: 9962040113)
I want the Left to think about
a different scenario, where India is willing to provide nuclear technology
for civilian use to another country, say Iran. Will we not like to ensure
that the cooperation in no way is utilized for the military program of
that country? Will we let the internathional community blame us for being
irresponsible? What the Left and all parties should also try to see is how
responsible the US Congress is and the way the US Congress works and see
whether we can create a decent Parilament that is a role model to others,
rather than creating a local market area in a prestigious institution that
governs a billion population. Let the Left parties ponder these questions
and give us an answer. |
